USDA Science Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Meet Jose

National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, is a time to celebrate the rich history, cultural diversity, and contributions from Hispanic communities. NIFA Investment Paves the Way for Veterinary Students

Since 2010, the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) has served the needs of food animal veterinarians and stakeholders in animal agriculture across the nation by supporting veterinary educational debt repayment in return for veterinarians’ services in designated, high priority, shortage situations. In this time, the VMLRP has awarded nearly 800 food animal veterinarians with loan repayment assistance.

As this recognition month comes to a close, USDA’s Research, Education, and Economics (REE) mission area is spotlighting the stories of several brilliant Hispanic colleagues who contribute so much to the Department each and every day.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

From mid-September through mid-October, USDA is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, an observance that recognizes contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans. In 2021, the Census Bureau reported more than 62 million Hispanics and Latinos living on the U.S. mainland and 3.3 million living in Puerto Rico. According to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the Hispanic and Latino share of the labor force is projected to reach 35.9 million in 2030, accounting for 78% of the net new workers between 2020 and 2030.
