Biodegradable Utensils

Petroleum-based plastics take up about 25% of landfills (USDA 2023). USDA scientists are developing bioplastics made from agricultural resources like corn, sugarcane, potatoes, rice, soy, and wheat. USDA researchers continue to develop solutions that create opportunities for farmers, meet consumer needs, and are better for the environment. Learn more: Repurposing Ag-Waste to Create Bioplastics.

Pizza

Did you know that Roma tomatoes, often used in marina sauce, were created in 1955 by USDA scientist William Porte in Maryland? Romas were bred from the San Marzano and Red Top tomatoes to resist wilt and pests, and to grow in different environments. Additionally, mozzarella cheese is a tasty topping for pizza, but it adds fat. USDA scientists in Pennsylvania invented a technology for making lower-fat mozzarella that retains its stretchy, meltable texture and delicious flavor. (USDA)
