National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics

On June 12, 2024 the United States released the National Strategy for Reducing Food Loss and Waste and Recycling Organics (PDF, 761 KB).

This National Strategy lays out a path for the United States to meet its national goal of reducing food loss and waste by 50% by 2030. The actions outlined in this strategy will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions (including methane), save households and businesses money, and build cleaner communities by reducing food loss and waste.

The four main objectives in the National Strategy are:

• Objective 1: Prevent food loss;
• Objective 2: Prevent food waste;
• Objective 3: Increase the recycling rate for all organic waste; and
• Objective 4: Support policies that incentivize and encourage food loss and waste prevention and organics recycling.

The National Strategy reflects over 10,000 public comments, received during the public comment period (December 5, 2023 – February 3, 2024). For more information on the range of comments, please see the National Strategy Appendix.
