STEM – the fields of study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
No one had trouble communicating despite the acronym overload at a STEM Internship Expo hosted recently at Phoenix College in Arizona.
Several USDA agencies gathered under the shade of a canopy with tables packed with information on internship programs and career opportunities for STEM students. USDA Rural Development staff was joined by the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Forest Service. Other USDA agencies were also represented.
Over 150 students meandered through Pastor Plaza talking to the various agencies represented and scoping out possible career and internship opportunities.
Roberto Gonzalez, Regional Director for the USDA-Hispanic Serving Institution National Program, organized “USDA Avenue” at the event where the various agencies within the Department set up their displays.
The Rural Development representative distributed information on careers within the agency and the Stay-in-School internship program.
Notwithstanding the 100+ degree weather, most students pronounced the Department offerings as…“cool”.
