USDA Helping You Make Healthier Food Choices

Do you want to make healthier food choices, but aren’t sure where to start?

USDA has three new on-line tools and sites that can get you going:

MyFood-a-pedia should be your first stop. Here you’ll find quick access to nutrition information for over 1,000 foods. MyFood-a-pedia has calorie count information and can help you figure out how what you’re eating contributes to your health. It also shows the number of “extra” calories in foods from solid fats, added sugars and alcohol.

Growing a Healthier You: Nutrition From the Farm to the Table links garden and farm produce to your nutritional well-being and shows the significance of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

The downloadable “10 Tips” series begins with ideas for how to cut back on salt and sodium, followed by tips on how to be a healthy role model for children, tips for following a vegetarian diet, and tips for making more environmentally friendly food choices. Other tips will be added regularly.

These three new online applications were designed by USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion as part of USDA’s new Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative, to help consumers make healthier food choices.
