Going Green
Materiel Management Service Center Support of E.O. 13514
Materiel Management Service Center’s (MMSC) recycling and re-use programs fully support Executive Order (EO) 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, dated October 5, 2009. This EO establishes an integrated strategy towards sustainability in the Federal Government and to make reduction of greenhouse gas emissions a priority for Federal agencies. MMSC’s staff tracks the reduction of greenhouse gases by using the EPA waste reduction models (WARM) and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Emissions Analysis Reports. MMSC recycling efforts in support of the EO include:
- Paper Recycling – Managed a contract with a local company to recycle obsolete forms, publications and miscellaneous paper products. During FY2014, 11 metric tons of carbon equivalents (MTCE) were reduced.
- Furniture re-use – Maintained an “as-is” furniture inventory where agencies can obtain serviceable excess furniture such as desks, book cases, credenzas, file cabinets, etc. Reusing furniture helps the environment by the reduction of carbon that is otherwise emitted during the production and delivery of new furniture. During FY2014, 37 MTCE were reduced.
- Scrap Metal Recycling – Managed a contract with a local company to recycle scrap metal. During FY2014, 650 MTCE were reduced.
- Electronics Recycling – Worked closely with UNICOR, Federal Prison Industries, Inc. recycling program managed by the Department of Justice. During FY2014, 53 tons of surplus electronic equipment were turned in to the UNICOR recycling center.
