NASS Internship Programs: A Great Path to the Federal Work Force

Today, we recognize National Intern Day—a day to celebrate the hard work and dedication interns have provide to USDA. But let’s also focus on the decision to become an intern and what it could mean for your future.

At USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), we use the Pathways Program to hire dozens of current students or recent graduates each year. They are hired through either our Internship Program or the Recent Graduates Program to serve in our regional field offices throughout the United States or at NASS headquarters in Washington D.C. in part-time and full-time positions.

NASS provides timely, accurate and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. Many of the interns NASS hires have or are working on degrees in survey, agricultural or mathematical statistics. Though NASS is an agency that is comprised of around 70% statisticians, there are often internships in other fields such as information technology, communications and more.

Internships are a great way to gain a path into our agency! NASS’s intention is to convert internships into career conditional appointments. The time invested and experience gained are beneficial to both interns and to NASS and these appointments serve to give interns a strong start in civil service employment. Once here, NASS offers options for advancing education through academic and professional development opportunities to assist in obtaining career goals.
