The Data Viewer provides a user-friendly interface for accessing agriculture and forestry sector greenhouse gas data from EPA’s annual Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks (the Inventory), which tracks greenhouse gas emissions and sinks from 1990 to present, and is submitted annually to the United Nations as part of the United States’ international reporting obligations. It offers a comprehensive accounting of greenhouse gas emissions across all economic sectors.
The tool enables a range of users including scientists, researchers, agricultural producers, environmental and agricultural organizations, and policymakers to interact with and explore data through an intuitive, user-friendly interface. Users can explore data by state, source (forestry, cropland, livestock, on-farm energy), and greenhouse gas type (carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide). The tool includes supplemental datasets, such as livestock population and manure management data, which enhance understanding of emission sources.
The Data Viewer is part of USDA’s broader efforts to improve greenhouse gas emissions tracking. In 2023, USDA received $300 million through the Inflation Reduction Act to invest in measuring, monitoring, reporting, and verification of conservation practices' impact on emissions and carbon sequestration.
The Data Viewer will be updated annually and can be accessed from the USDA Inventory and Assessment Page and at this link: Agriculture and Forestry Greenhouse Gas Inventory Data Viewer | USDA. Users can download the data directly through the “Data Download” tab in the visualization.
