United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development conducted a meeting in Indianapolis in early April to discuss the agency’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The event, hosted by the Indiana Soybean Alliance/Indiana Corn Growers Association presented information on RD’s new initiative to fund flex-fuel pumps. Approximately 50 distributors, grant writers, and stakeholders attended the event. Representatives from the American Coalition for Ethanol, Dresser Wayne, Gilbarco, Indiana Petroleum Markers & Convenience Store Association, and others joined in the discussion.
Curt Wiley, USDA Rural Development’s Chief of Staff, Business and Cooperatives Programs noted that President Barack Obama wants USDA to assist with the funding of 10,000 flex-fuel pumps across the country during the next five years. “Currently, there are over 8 million flexible fuel vehicles on the nation's roads, the bulk being located in the Midwest. States such as Indiana can help lead this initiative,” noted Wiley.
“America’s 21st century energy landscape presents needs that are greater than ever before. We face new challenges to reduce dependence on imported oil; improve the environment; and make clean, sustainable and affordable energy alternatives available to businesses. USDA Rural Development is helping lead the way in the agriculture sector – finding energy solutions in our fields and helping rural residents and communities access renewable energy systems and use energy more efficiently,” Phil Lehmkuhler, USDA Rural Development Indiana State Director said.
