The USDA Food Safety Discovery Zone Takes on the Fighting Irish

Published:
September 3, 2010

The USDA Food Safety Discovery Zone travels to Notre Dame, Indiana, September 3-4, 2010, to meet the “Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.”

The University of Notre Dame is one of the largest, most historical, and most recognized names in college football. The team plays its home games on the University of Notre Dame's campus at Notre Dame Stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 80,795 fans. What an outreach opportunity for the Discovery Zone!

The USDA Food Safety Discovery Zone will be demonstrating safe tailgating at the September 3-4, 2010 football game and will be located in the Irish Green hospitality area on the south side of the University campus.  The Irish Green hospitality area, established in 2009, is a free and open public space, offering a family friendly environment for fans to hang out. Just the perfect location/venue for the Discovery Zone!

On September 3rd, the evening before the big game, the Discovery Zone will be part of the Irish Green’s pre-game pep rally, along with family fun, music, and cheering.

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame vs. the Boilermakers of Purdue University football game on September 4, 2010 is the opening game of the season for this historic and well-known university.

Volunteers from the Purdue University Extension office, St. Joseph County, will be assisting the USDA Food Safety Education Staff’s USPHS Officers in educating the fans about food safety.

The focus of the Food Safety Discovery Zone’s first ever college football tailgating event is safe grilling tips and how to safely pack a cooler with food for the game. In addition, our general food safety messages will be included as a part of the mobile’s lessons.

Find out more food safety information on tailgating on the FSIS site.

It will be a weekend filled with family fun, football, and food safety!
