Bruce formed the nonprofit organization Choose Outdoors in 2008 to bring together the diverse outdoor recreation interests that enjoy the National Forests and Grasslands. The recreation constituency is composed of industry, enthusiast, and advocacy groups that span the spectrum from highly developed activities like alpine skiing, to motorized-based travel uses, and nonmotorized, traditional activities like hunting, hiking, and equestrian use.

These interests have a history of competitiveness and conflict both on the ground and in policy issues. Choose Outdoors, under Bruce’s leadership has convened full spectrum interests in Denver, Salt lake City, and Anchorage, among others to focus on implementation of the U.S. Forest Service’s Framework for Sustainable Recreation, support National Get Outdoors activities, and stimulate community dialogue about connecting people and places across the landscape through outdoor recreation.

He contributed to the formation of a Senate caucus on outdoor recreation, and has recently expanded his focus to include work on the bark beetle and biomass utilization issues in Colorado.
