Garden, Compost & Waste Reduction Project

Silver Stage G.R.E.E.N. Team

Website

Objective

Our goal is to REDUCE the amount of food wasted at school, particularly during the lunch hour; REUSE food that is not opened by using it in classroom cooking projects (which will be eaten by students and/or staff OR they will be cooked and sold as snacks at local school activities); and RECYCLE  unopened food as snacks or donations to our local food pantry AND recycle as much of the compostable waste in our school compost as possible.

Activity 1

We will collect compostable waste during lunch by starting a student-led collecting system that will run during the lunch hour each day, and use it to create compost for our school garden.  This will greatly amend the existing garden, as it consists of sand and rocky clay, no real dirt or soil.

Start: September 2013
End: ONGOING

Activity 2

We will collect NON-COMPOSTABLE food waste and arrange delivery to local farmers who raise pet pigs.

Start: September 2013
End: ONGOING

Activity 3

We will collect NON-COMPOSTABLE food waste and arrange delivery to local farmers who raise pet pigs.

Start: September 2013
End: ONGOING

Activity 4

We will collect unopened food from breakfast and lunch and we will EITHER use it in classroom cooking projects OR we will deliver it to our local food bank where it will be distributed to food bank visitors.

Start: January 2014
End: ONGOING

Activity 5

As part of the collection program during lunch, we will collect data on how much of each food is left unopened, and we will estimate the amount of each type of partially eaten food thrown away.  This data will then be shared with our local Food Service Director in an effort to take student preference into consideration when planning the lunch menu, hopefully eliminating the habit of buying/serving food that ultimately ends up discarded.

Start – January 2014
